Buttermilk Pie

Buttermilk Pie

Buttermilk Pie is a classic Southern dessert featuring a rich, creamy custard filling with a perfectly balanced sweet and tangy flavor, all nestled in a flaky buttery pie crust. It’s an easy-to-make, comforting treat ideal for any occasion, loved for its smooth texture and nostalgic taste.

Ingredients

Scale

Pie Crust

  • 1 9-inch flaky pie crust (homemade or pre-made)

Custard Filling

  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour blend for gluten-free option)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pie Crust: Begin by placing your pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish, gently pressing it evenly against the sides and bottom. Trim any excess dough around the edges and crimp if desired. To prevent sogginess, chill the crust while preparing the filling or optionally brush with a beaten egg white.
  2. Mix the Custard Filling: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar until well combined and slightly frothy. Add in the melted butter, vanilla extract, and all-purpose flour, mixing until smooth. Slowly pour in the buttermilk while continuing to whisk until the mixture is creamy and uniform.
  3. Pour and Bake: Carefully pour the custard filling into the prepared pie crust. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 50 to 60 minutes, or until the center is just set but still slightly jiggly. The top should turn a beautiful golden brown.
  4. Cool Before Serving: Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack. This helps the custard fully set and enhances the flavors. Serve at room temperature or chilled according to your preference.

Notes

  • Use room temperature ingredients to ensure a smooth custard mixture.
  • Do not overbake; aim for a slight wobble in the center for creamy texture.
  • Brushing the crust with beaten egg white before filling can prevent sogginess.
  • Let the pie rest and cool fully before slicing for cleaner cuts and enhanced flavor.
  • Use fresh buttermilk for the signature tangy flavor.
