Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 2 pounds Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 1/8 inch thick)

Cheese Sauce

  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar or Gruyere cheese (or a mix)
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Optional Toppings and Variations

  • Breadcrumbs for extra crispy topping
  • Fresh thyme or rosemary for herb infusion
  • Crisp bacon bits for smoky flavor
  • Pinch of cayenne or smoked paprika for spice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Potatoes: Peel and thinly slice the potatoes using a sharp knife or mandoline slicer. Aim for slices about 1/8 inch thick to ensure even cooking and tender texture.
  2. Make the Cheese Sauce: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Sauté the finely chopped garlic and onion until fragrant and translucent. Pour in the heavy cream and warm gently, then stir in the shredded cheese until fully melted and the sauce is smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Layer the Dish: Grease a baking dish and arrange a layer of potato slices. Spoon some of the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Repeat layering potatoes and sauce until all are used, finishing with cheese sauce on top.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 45 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15 to 20 minutes until the top is bubbly and golden brown.
  5. Rest and Serve: Allow the Cheesy Au Gratin Potatoes to cool for 10 minutes after baking. This helps the sauce set slightly and makes serving easier and less runny.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline slicer for uniform potato slices to ensure even cooking.
  • Do not overcrowd or press down the potato layers to avoid sogginess.
  • Mix different cheeses like Gruyere and cheddar for balanced flavor and meltiness.
  • Use fresh heavy cream and real butter for richer taste and creamier texture.
  • Rest the dish before serving to allow the sauce to thicken and texture to set.
