Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 4 fresh trout fillets (about 6 oz each)
  • 1 lemon (for juice and garnish)
  • 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh herbs (dill, parsley, or thyme), chopped
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Fish: Rinse the trout fillets under cold water and pat them dry thoroughly with paper towels. Season both sides evenly with salt and pepper to bring out the natural flavors.
  2. Heat Your Pan: Preheat a non-stick or cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add butter or olive oil to coat the bottom of the pan and heat until hot to create a golden crust and prevent sticking.
  3. Cook the Trout Skin-Side Down: Place the trout fillets in the skillet, skin-side down if the skin is on. Press gently with a spatula to ensure even contact. Cook undisturbed for 4-5 minutes until the skin is crisp and browned, then carefully flip the fillets.
  4. Add Flavor Enhancers: After flipping, add minced garlic and fresh herbs to the pan. Spoon some melted butter or oil over the fillets as they finish cooking for 3-4 more minutes until the flesh is opaque and flakes easily with a fork.
  5. Finish with Lemon: Remove the trout from the pan and squeeze fresh lemon juice over the fillets just before serving. This adds bright acidity that balances the rich flavors perfectly.

Notes

  • Choose fresh trout fillets with firm flesh and no fishy smell for the best flavor and texture.
  • Preheat the pan thoroughly to prevent sticking and ensure a crispy skin.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan; cook fillets in batches if necessary, giving each enough space.
  • Avoid overcooking—fish is done when it flakes easily and is opaque inside.
  • Use a thin, flexible fish spatula to flip fillets gently without breaking.
