Ingredients

Scale

Lasagna Components

  • 12 lasagna noodles (regular or gluten-free)
  • 1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage (or vegetable alternatives for vegetarian option)
  • 4 cups tomato sauce or marinara sauce
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Aromatics & Seasoning

  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning (basil, oregano, thyme blend)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sauce and Filling: Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat, sauté the chopped onion and garlic until fragrant and translucent. Add ground beef or Italian sausage and cook until browned. Stir in tomato sauce and Italian seasoning, then simmer for 15 minutes to develop rich flavors.
  2. Cook the Noodles: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and spread flat on a sheet or pan to prevent sticking.
  3. Mix the Cheese Layer: In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese with a beaten egg and grated Parmesan cheese. Mix well to create a creamy, binding cheese mixture.
  4. Assemble the Layers: In a baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Layer noodles over the sauce, then evenly spread the ricotta mixture, sprinkle shredded mozzarella, and add more meat sauce. Repeat the layering for 3–4 layers, finishing with mozzarella and Parmesan on top for a golden crust.
  5. Bake to Perfection: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes or until cheese is bubbling and lightly browned.
  6. Rest Before Serving: Let the lasagna rest and cool for 10–15 minutes after baking to set and make slicing easier, ensuring neat portions.

Notes

  • Use fresh herbs like basil or oregano to boost flavors beyond the dried seasoning.
  • Don’t over-sauce to avoid soggy lasagna; balance the layers for perfect texture.
  • Spread fillings evenly for consistent flavor and texture in every bite.
  • Allow the lasagna to rest after baking so it holds its shape when sliced.
  • Choose quality cheeses for best texture and taste results.
