Ingredients

Scale

Meatballs

  • 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Creamy Sauce

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour alternative)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meatball Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, and ground allspice. Mix gently but thoroughly until just combined to keep the meatballs tender.
  2. Form and Brown the Meatballs: Shape the mixture into small, bite-sized meatballs about 1 to 1 ½ inches in diameter. Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the meatballs evenly on all sides without cooking them through completely, then remove and set aside.
  3. Make the Creamy Sauce: In the same skillet, sprinkle all-purpose flour and stir to create a roux. Cook for about a minute, then gradually whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Let the sauce simmer while stirring constantly until thickened and smooth.
  4. Finish Cooking the Meatballs in Sauce: Return the browned meatballs to the skillet with the sauce. Add the heavy cream and simmer gently for 10 to 15 minutes, allowing the meatballs to cook through fully and absorb the rich flavor of the sauce.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the meat mixture to keep meatballs tender.
  • Use a cookie scoop or spoon to ensure uniform size for even cooking.
  • Brown meatballs in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan and ensure a nice crust.
  • Simmer gently in sauce to lock in moisture and flavor.
  • Use freshly ground allspice and pepper for authentic and enhanced flavor.
