Sweet Potato Cheese Balls

Sweet Potato Cheese Balls are a delicious, crispy snack combining the natural sweetness of mashed sweet potatoes with melty, gooey cheese. Perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft inside, they make an easy, versatile appetizer or snack ideal for parties, kids’ lunches, or cozy nights in. Simple to prepare with minimal ingredients, these balls can be baked or fried and customized with your choice of spices, cheeses, or dietary preferences.

Ingredients

Scale

Base Ingredients

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (about 2 cups cooked and mashed)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)
  • 1 large egg

Seasonings

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: 1/2 teaspoon paprika or garlic powder

Cooking

  • Oil for frying (or use a light spray of oil if baking)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes: Peel and cube the sweet potatoes, then boil or steam until fork-tender. Drain well and mash thoroughly until smooth to create a creamy base for the cheese balls.
  2. Combine Ingredients: In a large bowl, mix the mashed sweet potatoes with shredded cheese, seasonings, and the egg. Stir well until the mixture is soft yet holds together. Refrigerate for 15-20 minutes to firm up for easier shaping.
  3. Shape the Balls: Using your hands or a small cookie scoop, scoop small portions of the mixture and roll them into evenly sized balls about the size of a walnut to ensure even cooking and good portion control.
  4. Coat with Breadcrumbs: Place breadcrumbs in a shallow dish and roll each ball gently to coat all sides evenly, ensuring a golden and crunchy crust after cooking.
  5. Cook Until Golden: Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat or preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Fry the balls about 3-5 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy, or bake them on a greased or lined baking sheet for 20-25 minutes, turning halfway, until golden and crisp.

Notes

  • Use firm mashed sweet potatoes without excess liquid for easier shaping.
  • Refrigerate the mixture before shaping to help the balls hold their shape during cooking.
  • Choose mozzarella for meltiness or cheddar for sharper flavor.
  • Use a cookie scoop for uniform-sized balls and consistent cooking.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan when frying to maintain crispiness and even cooking.
