Grilled Halloumi

Grilled Halloumi

Grilled halloumi is a quick and easy summer treat featuring golden, crispy edges and a soft, salty interior. Perfectly smoky and versatile, this gluten-free and vegetarian dish pairs beautifully with fresh herbs, zesty lemon, and a variety of accompaniments—ideal for backyard BBQs, picnics, or a savory snack with minimal fuss and maximum flavor.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • Halloumi Cheese, sliced about 1/2 inch thick
  • Olive Oil, for brushing
  • Fresh Lemon Juice, for drizzling
  • Black Pepper, freshly ground, to taste

Optional Herbs & Add-Ins

  • Fresh Parsley, chopped
  • Fresh Mint, chopped
  • Fresh Oregano, chopped
  • Smoked Paprika or Chili Flakes, for spicy kick
  • Garlic, for herb marinade
  • Honey or Pomegranate Molasses, for drizzling after grilling
  • Grilled Vegetables (such as zucchini or bell peppers), for serving alongside

Instructions

  1. Prep the Cheese: Slice the halloumi into approximately 1/2-inch thick pieces. This thickness helps the cheese hold its shape on the grill without melting away.
  2. Oil the Cheese: Lightly brush each slice with olive oil to prevent sticking and promote a golden crust while grilling.
  3. Heat Your Grill or Pan: Preheat your grill or grill pan to medium-high heat to ensure it’s hot enough to sear the cheese quickly.
  4. Grill the Cheese: Place the halloumi slices on the grill and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side until distinct grill marks appear and the outside becomes crisp and golden.
  5. Add Finishing Touches: Remove from the grill, drizzle with fresh lemon juice, sprinkle with freshly ground black pepper, and garnish with chopped herbs for a vibrant and flavorful finish.

Notes

  • Use high-quality, fresh halloumi cheese for the best grilling results and richer flavor.
  • Do not overcook; grill just until golden crusts form while keeping the inside soft to avoid toughness.
  • Brushing olive oil helps prevent sticking and makes flipping easier.
  • Allow the grilled halloumi to rest for a minute after cooking to redistribute juices for a creamier bite.
  • Use a hot grill to quickly seal the cheese and preserve its texture and flavor.
