Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium head of cabbage, chopped into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 23 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, freshly ground, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

Optional Ingredients

  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1/2 to 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your choice)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Chop the cabbage into bite-sized pieces. Dice the onion and garlic finely. If using rice, cook it separately until tender. Having everything ready ensures a smooth cooking process.
  2. Brown the Ground Beef: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef until browned and no longer pink. Drain any excess fat to keep the dish light but flavorful.
  3. Sauté the Onions and Garlic: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the browned beef. Cook for 3-4 minutes until fragrant and translucent, enhancing the dish’s flavor base.
  4. Combine Ingredients in a Casserole Dish: Transfer the beef mixture to a casserole dish. Stir in the chopped cabbage, cooked rice (if using), tomato sauce, salt, pepper, and smoked paprika. Mix thoroughly to distribute flavors evenly.
  5. Bake Until Tender: Cover the casserole dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 45 minutes. Remove the foil during the last 10 minutes to allow a lightly caramelized texture on top.
  6. Add Cheese (Optional): If using cheese, sprinkle it over the casserole during the last 10 minutes of baking so it melts perfectly without burning.

Notes

  • Drain excess grease after browning beef to prevent greasiness and highlight flavors.
  • Chop cabbage finely for even cooking and a appealing casserole texture.
  • Mix all ingredients thoroughly before baking to ensure consistent flavor in every bite.
  • Use freshly ground black pepper and smoked paprika to enhance the dish’s taste.
  • Let the casserole rest slightly after baking to set, making it easier to serve.
